A New Zealand supermarket's AI-powered meal planning app has cooked up more than just creative recipes, as users stumbled upon some questionable culinary suggestions.

The app, designed by Pak 'n' Save, initially aimed to help customers make the most of their leftovers amidst rising living costs.

However, the AI's ingenuity took an odd turn, proposing recipes like "poison bread sandwiches" and mosquito-repellent roast potatoes.

The app, which generates meal plans and recipes based on user-input ingredients, garnered attention on social media for its curious concoctions, including an eyebrow-raising "oreo vegetable stir-fry."

Things took a serious and unintended twist when users began experimenting with unconventional inputs…

One ill-advised "aromatic water mix" recipe, for instance, could potentially produce chlorine gas, touted as a refreshing non-alcoholic drink.

Unfortunately, the app failed to mention that inhaling chlorine gas can have dire consequences.

Amidst the humor and experimentation, New Zealand political commentator Liam Hehir shared the app's misfires on Twitter, leading others to uncover more outlandish suggestions. These included bleach-based "mocktails," ant-poison and glue sandwiches, and even a "methanol bliss" french toast.

In response to the growing concerns, a supermarket spokesperson expressed disappointment that a few users had misused the tool and emphasized their commitment to refining the AI's controls for safety and appropriateness.
