Anthropic x2, new iPhone drop, and everything else

Good morning. The intern said he vibe coded a time machine.
He just quit and said he’ll be back yesterday…
Let’s dig in.
🍭 What’s Cookin’:
Copilot meets Claude
Anthropic’s $1.5B settlement gets delayed

And Everything Else
Claude <> Copilot
🧏♂️ Microsoft Quietly Taps Anthropic For Office AI
The Bite: Microsoft plans to route select Microsoft 365 Copilot features to Anthropic’s Claude. (alongside OpenAI models)
After internal tests showed Claude shines at things like prettier slides and finance‑y Excel tasks, per reports.
Official announcement expected in the coming weeks.
Snacks:
Where It Lands: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Some Copilot features get Claude under the hood.
Why Claude: Internal trials reportedly favored Claude for slide generation and certain spreadsheet ops.
How It Runs: Microsoft will pay Anthropic via AWS even as Azure remains home base.
Price Check: No change to Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing (as of now).
Why it Bites: Microsoft turned Office into a model swingers’ club.
Some tasks get GPT, others get Claude, and users don’t even know whose code baby they’re raising.
It’s efficient for Microsoft.
But for OpenAI, it’s like watching your long-term partner rave about how much better someone else makes PowerPoint transitions.

Anthropic
👨⚖️ Judge Smacks Pause on Anthropic’s $1.5B Deal
The Bite: A federal judge delayed preliminary approval of Anthropic’s proposed $1.5B settlement with a class of authors, saying he needs more detail on who’s covered and how claims will work.
The plan had proposed a payout of roughly $3k per book for 500k(ish) titles.
Catch our earlier breakdown from Monday: (link to mondays article goes here).
Snacks:
The Judge: Judge Alsup pressed pause and asked for more transparency before any green light.
The Math: $3k per book. Plan called about 500k books in question.
The Homework: Parties must file more info on affected works.
The Backstory: In June, Alsup signaled training on lawfully acquired books might be fair use but claims tied to pirated copies don’t qualify.
What’s Next: Preliminary approval reconsideration once the court gets the details it wants.
Why it bites: Anthropic thought they could Venmo authors $1.5B and call it a day.
Instead, the judge basically said: show your receipts.
If this stalls or shrinks, every AI lab planning to bulk-settle copyright claims might need a ‘Plan B.’
