Building A Better Battery With AI

Remember hearing stories about phones igniting in pockets or people complaining about their electric car sputtering out miles from a charging station?

We may not have to deal with those issues much longer because a team of scientists at Microsoft and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have unlocked a promising new battery material, and it could seriously impact your daily life.

The new battery material could make batteries safer, last longer, and rely less on limited lithium resources.

In other words, this latest development put the energizer bunny on notice.

But even more remarkable was how they found this discovery. It’s straight out of a science fiction movie.

First, scientists started with a massive 32 million potential battery materials – which for context, is like searching for a needle in a haystack that’s the size of Texas! (I would have given up.)

From there, they used Microsoft's Azure Quantum Elements, a powerful tool that combines super-fast computers and AI to find out what materials were stable enough to use, and then narrowed it down even further by adding a conductivity filter.

After that, they used the AI to peek inside the materials, watching how atoms and molecules danced around and finally, after all these filters, only 23 materials remained, all in just 80 hours!

This leaves us all with one word to say… an enthusiastic “DAMN!”

While having a better battery is wanted – needed even, the real story here is this discovery is just the beginning. It proves that AI isn't some sci-fi fantasy; it's a powerful tool to accelerate scientific breakthroughs. The only question remains is, how are you going to use AI to improve your life?

Volkswagen Adds Conversational Co-Pilot

Get ready to ditch your clunky infotainment system and say hello to a new co-pilot in select Volkswagen models!

Starting in the second quarter of 2024, cars like the ID.7, Tiguan, and Passat (and more) will be equipped with ChatGPT integrated into their existing "Hello IDA" voice assistant.

This was announced by Volkswagen at CES 2024, showcasing the future of in-car technology.

Here's how it works:

  1. Talk Normally: Ask IDA anything - news updates, directions, even philosophical musings.

  2. AI Handoff: If IDA can't handle your request (beyond basic functions like AC control), it seamlessly hands off to ChatGPT.

  3. Your Personal Infotainer: ChatGPT then taps into its vast knowledge base to answer your questions, read aloud researched content (imagine audiobooks on demand!), or even crack a joke to lighten the mood during rush hour.

This move follows a trend of AI assistants becoming increasingly common in cars, with Mercedes-Benz already offering a similar feature.

It's a glimpse into the future of driving, where our cars become more than just a box with four wheels but helpful companions that make our rides safer, more informed, and don’t ask us if we’re there yet.

Long story short…

Volkswagen’s have never looked sounded so good.
