Governor Newsom Vetoes California AI Safety Bill
California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed SB 1047, a bill aimed at requiring AI companies to implement security measures for public protection.
Newsom cited concerns over the bill's broadness and potential to stifle AI innovation. The bill, which would have affected AI models costing over $100 million to train, faced opposition from tech giants like Meta and support from Hollywood names and unions such as SAG-AFTRA.
Newsom acknowledged the need for AI safety regulations but criticized the bill for not being informed by enough empirical data.

Apple Faces Legal Deadline in Epic Lawsuit
Apple has been ordered to produce 1.3 million documents by September 30th, 2024 [aka today], as part of its ongoing legal battle with Epic Games.
The documents pertain to Apple’s decision-making process regarding changes to the App Store, following a court ruling in 2021. Magistrate Judge Thomas S. Hixson denied Apple’s last-minute request for more time, calling it "bad behavior."
Hixson asserted that Apple has the resources to meet the deadline, despite the company's claims of needing more time to review the documents.
