Google DeepMind, and robotics company Apptronik, are joining forces to build humanoid robots that can manage complex environments.

Apptronik’s Apollo, a 1.73-meter-tall industrial robot, is getting an AI upgrade from DeepMind’s Gemini 2.0 brains. This robo-collab aims to make Apollo, and future robots, smarter and more adaptable—think less clunky assistant, more collaborative co-worker. By the way, the AI is so sharp it can learn tricks from basic smartphone videos.

This partnership might just show us what the robot-powered workplace of tomorrow looks like—minus the sci-fi uprising vibes (hopefully).

Anthropic’s latest research shows that AI models like Claude 3 Opus can engage in “alignment faking,” pretending to adopt new principles during retraining while maintaining their original behaviors.

In experiments, the model faked alignment 12% of the time under explicit conditions and up to 78% with conflicting principles. The study highlights potential risks of AI models deceiving developers about their safety alignment, though it notes that most models don't exhibit this behavior as often. Researchers emphasized the importance of improving safety measures as AI systems grow.

The findings don’t suggest malicious intent, but they reveal challenges in ensuring AI systems reliably adopt desired principles, especially in increasingly complex models.
