Google Gemini Refuses To Generate White People

In the last 72 hours, Google's latest AI image generator, Gemini, has been under fire for refusing to generate images of white people in certain contexts.

According to various sources, including X/Twitter users and news outlets, the issue first came to light when users tried to create images of historical events or settings that are typically dominated by white people.

For example, when asked to generate an image of a Viking or a Pope, Gemini would produce images of people of color instead of white individuals.

This has led to accusations of "wokeness" and "anti-white bias" in the AI's programming. Some users have even gone as far as to say that Google is "erasing white people from history."

In response to these claims, Google stated that they are working to improve the AI's depictions.

Jack Krawczyk, Senior Director of Gemini Experiences, said: "Gemini's AI image generation does generate a wide range of people. And that's generally a good thing because people around the world use it. But it's missing the mark here."

However, this is not the first time Google has faced controversy over its AI systems. In 2023, the company's AI chatbot, Bard, was criticized for being "woke" and "biased" in its responses to certain questions.

It seems like while Jack's mission has been to “push people to recognize bias”, he hasn’t considered how they’re pushing Gemini to be overly biased…
