Google Planning Its Biggest Startup Acquisition Ever

Google is considering a $23 billion purchase of Wiz, a cloud cybersecurity startup — nearly twice what Google spent on Motorola Mobility in 2012.

Wiz is based in New York City and offers enterprise security tools and scanners.

The deal, driven by Google Cloud boss Thomas Kurian, would enhance Google's cloud security capabilities amid rising competition and security concerns.

However, the acquisition will probably face regulatory scrutiny from US antitrust authorities.

Amazon’s AI Shopping Assistant Rolls Out To US

Amazon's AI shopping assistant, Rufus, is now available to all US users on Amazon's mobile app.

Not much has changed, but for those who missed it, Rufus can answer product-related questions, compare items, and provide order updates.

It launched in February to a limited audience, and now all US-based shoppers can ask Rufus general questions, including those about US elections.

The assistant is still in beta as Amazon is still refining its guardrails.

The Countdown To EU’s AI Act Compliance Begins

The AI Act brings a comprehensive number of regulations to the EU, and sets several compliance deadlines for tech companies.

Effective from August 1, 2024, the law bans AI uses that threaten citizens' rights, like biometric categorization and predictive policing.

By February 2025, these banned applications must be phased out completely.

By August 2025, general-purpose AI systems must comply with copyright and transparency requirements.

If companies do not comply, they’ll face hefty fines — with the highest penalty set at €35 million or 7% of global annual revenue
