Tech Wars
Meta To Be The Microsoft Of Headsets

Meta is making significant strides in the VR headset market by licensing its Horizon OS to major tech companies [like Lenovo and Asus] — including a partnership with Xbox for a limited-edition, gaming-focused Quest headset.

By opening up its platform and inviting competitors like Google to bring their app stores to Horizon OS, Meta aims to foster a diverse ecosystem similar to Android’s response to iOS.

This approach not only improves the hardware landscape but integrates Meta's social layer, Horizon, potentially boosting its monetization through ads and commerce.

Amazon Shuts Down California Drone Delivery Service

Amazon is closing down its Prime Air drone delivery operations in Lockeford, California, and shifting its focus to a new location in Tolleson, Arizona, to offer same-day deliveries in the Phoenix metro area.

The California site was operational since 2022, and was one of the initial testing grounds for Amazon’s ambitious project to deliver products via drone within 30 minutes.

The newer MK30 drone, designed to handle light rain and offer improvements over earlier versions, is still under testing with hopes to enhance delivery capabilities.

Despite the closure, Amazon continues its drone operations in College Station, Texas, and plans to expand with new locations in 2025.

Microsoft Launches Smallest AI Model Yet

Microsoft has introduced Phi-3 Mini, its most compact AI model to date, marking the first in a series of smaller, more efficient AI models designed for easier deployment on devices like smartphones and laptops.

Trained on a dataset crafted from simplified 'children's books' generated by larger language models, Phi-3 Mini boasts 3.8 billion parameters and promises performance akin to much larger models.

It's now available on platforms like Azure, Hugging Face, and Ollama, with two larger versions—Phi-3 Small and Phi-3 Medium—planned for release.
