🍭 Open-Source and Soccer Moms ⚽
OpenAI's open-source models are here.

Good morning. Our intern took a long lunch to visit a GPU field for the best crops.
We told him that’s not what open-source means…
Let’s dig in.

👐 OpenAI Drops Two Open-Source Models
The Bite: On Tuesday, OpenAI released their two open-source AI models.
- gpt-oss-120b (Large)
- gpt-oss-20b (Medium)
“…supported by the Apache 2.0 license. Build freely without worrying about copyleft restrictions or patent risk”
Snacks:
120b: Built for powerhouses (think data centers, pro desktops)
Agentic tasks
Full chain-of-thought
Deeply customizable
Fine tune, adjust reasoning levels
20b: Medium-sized, runs smoothly on regular laptops/desktops
Same agentic features & customization,
scaled for everyone
Allegedly hallucinates a lot in certain areas.

Why it Bites: Was this a gesture for positive public image?
Or is this OpenAI actually being… you know… “open”?
Hard to tell.
Most likely? Somewhere in the middle:
Look generous, lure talent, harvest feedback, and keep the crown jewels (GPT-5) proprietary.
For builders it’s Christmas; for regulators it’s ammo; for the rest of us, it’s a reminder that “open” in AI usually comes with an asterisk.

Feel Good Story
🫂 Colorado Woman uses AI to save residents up to $2m
The Bite: After the Marshall Fire, a Colorado woman used AI to find proof the city owed fire victims up to $2M in rebates.
She didn’t wait for lawyers or meetings, she fed hundreds of hours of city council transcripts into an AI and found the receipts herself.
Snacks:
Tawnya Somauroo lost her home in the Marshall Fire and rebuilt
She remembered the city promised to refund permit overcharges
Officials claimed no such thing happened
So she asked Gemini (or “an AI program” lol) to dig through meetings
Found exact quotes, dates, names.
Council is now reconsidering refunds thanks to her AI report

Why it bites: This sounds like a 2024 story. But it’s 2025.
And most of the world still thinks AI is either scary, scammy, or someone else’s job.
If you’re reading this and using AI weekly?
You’re already ahead of 99%.
The future will be filled with prompt engineers and AI generated simulations.
And also soccer moms with receipts.
Are you ready?
