Insider Secrets
OpenAI Reveals Deal With The Pentagon
Up until January 10, OpenAI’s “usage policies” included a ban on “activity that has high risk of physical harm, including,” specifically, “weapons development” and “military and warfare.”
However, that plainly worded prohibition against military applications would seemingly rule out any official, and extremely lucrative, use by the Department of Defense or any other state military.
The new policy retains an injunction not to “use our service to harm yourself or others” and gives “develop or use weapons” as an example, but the blanket ban on “military and warfare” use vanished.
The unannounced redaction is part of a major rewrite of the policy page was supposedly intended to make the document “clearer” and “more readable,” but we now know that the reason behind this change is because OpenAI is working with the Pentagon.
OpenAI confirmed that they’re working with the US Defense Department on open-source cybersecurity software and is also looking into ways to prevent veteran suicide with its tech.
OpenAI VP of global affairs Anna Makanju revealed the company's reversal in its willingness to work with the military during a Bloomberg talk at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland this week.
"Because we previously had what was essentially a blanket prohibition on military, many people thought that would prohibit many of these use cases, which people think are very much aligned with what we want to see in the world," she said, as quoted by Bloomberg.
Note: OpenAI is keeping a ban in place for having its tech being used to develop weapons or harm people.

Samsung’s AI-Optimized Smartphone
Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S24, the first truly AI-optimized smartphone. Pre-orders have already begun, and in-store purchases launch on January 31st, 2024… we'll see you in line!
Yes, Samsung has officially kicked off the AI Smartphone arms race by dropping the beautiful S24 Galaxy, and its features are nothing short of cosmically cool.
The S24 series seamlessly integrates AI into its core functionality, from bridging language barriers in real-time with Live Translate to amplifying your creativity with the ProVisual Engine, all powered by Google's Gemini AI.
This marks the era of the truly smart smartphone. (Samsung, if you're reading this, you're welcome). And the possibilities of this technology are industry-changing.
For example, armed with just the Galaxy S24, in theory, you could travel to foreign countries and never need a guide, all thanks to Live Translate's real-time voice and text translation within native apps. And that’s just the beginning of the disruption.
The ProVisual Engine boasts an eye-opening camera system with 5x optical zoom, allowing you to capture stunning close-ups even from afar. AI editing tools like Super HDR and Object Eraser help you polish your photos with ease, while social media integration lets you share your clout masterpieces directly to your favorite platforms.
While tech-savvy users might be immediately drawn to these cutting-edge features, there's something for everyone in the S24 series.
Even everyday tasks become enriched with AI's touch. Take note-taking, for instance. Smart summaries automatically condense your recordings and notes, saving you precious time and effort. And thanks to Circle to Search, finding information feels more intuitive than ever, allowing you to visually explore interconnected topics instead of typing keywords.
TL;DR Samsung has officially kicked off what we're calling the AI smartphone arms race, and if you want to be part of the rollout, the S24 Ultra starts at $1,299.99, the S24+ at $999, and the S24 at $799.
