Jobs
📉 Stop Blaming AI for the Tech Hiring Slump

The Bite: Tech jobs didn’t vanish, the money did.

Postings for software roles peaked in early 2022 and then fell off a cliff months before ChatGPT showed up.

Employment itself is still higher than pre-COVID, but with fewer openings, less churn, and tighter budgets; which makes it feels like a freeze.

The real story isn’t “AI took my job.”
It’s “the Fed raised rates in 2022 and everyone closed their wallets.”

Not rocket science.
Basic economics.

Snacks:

  • Software job postings tanked 39% in 2022 (pre-ChatGPT)

  • Tech headcount? Still +8% vs 2019, just less mobility

  • VC funding dried up when free money disappeared

  • Fed hikes (March 2022) made hiring expensive overnight

  • Workers say they fear AI, but economists point at budgets and currency debasement.

Why it Bites: AI makes an easy villain, but the job markets downturn was baked in by the macro.

Cheap money ended, VC funding slowed, and suddenly every CFO turned into a bouncer at the hiring club.

Want a parallel? Same week jobs started sliding, Netflix cracked down on password sharing, reported subscriber loss, and endured a brutal 20% $NFLX ( ▲ 0.49% ) dump.

AI is changing what work looks like, sure.
But it didn’t cause the freeze.

It all started before AI entered the chat.

AI Art
🎶 AI Musicians Just Landed a Record Deal

The Bite: British AI creator Oliver McCann (aka imoliver) just signed with Hallwood Media after one of his AI-generated tracks hit 3M streams despite having zero musical training.

This marks the first time a label has bet on an AI artist.

Snacks:

  • imoliver used AI Tool, Suno, to create the tracks that got him signed

  • Velvet Sundown, an all-AI band, tricked Spotify listeners into millions of streams before revealing they weren’t real

  • Sony, Universal, Warner: Suing Suno + Udio for training models on copyrighted music

  • Deezer claimed 18% of all uploads are AI and most go unnoticed.

  • In Feb. 1000+ artists protested by releasing “silent albums”

  • will.i.am and Timbaland are leaning in, using AI tools to produce and collab

Why it bites: The industry has always had gatekeepers.
Labels, studios, money, and even the instruments themselves.

Laptops with FL Studio started to chip at that gate.

Now AI music is heading towards the gate with a wrecking ball.

A single text prompt can now do the work of a band, a producer, and a marketing team in one shot.

Gary Vee’s been screaming for years about “AI influencers” taking over.

This is that prophecy.

For creators, it’s a cheat code.
For labels, it’s an extinction-level event.

Napster cracked distribution.
AI is cracking creation itself.
