Youāre Invited: Midjourneyās Birthday Party š
Last week, Midjourney officially turned one year old. During its first year of life it evolved from trippy image generator to realistic photo album.

In February 2022, Midjourney launched the closed beta to just 500 users, and months later, on July 12th, launched the first public beta.
Now, the Midjourney Discord server supports a whopping 15+ million users who are constantly generating, upscaling, and providing real time feedback to the AI algorithm.
All of this before theyāve even launched their web application.
Things Midjourney will support/have very soon:
-Inpainting
-Outpainting ("zoom-out" feature)
-Image to Text using /describe
-Higher Res Images (v6)
-Text Support (write words in images, v7/v8)
-Mobile Experience
-Web UI (bye discord?)
-Real-Time Drawing
-APIs for tool buildingā Nick St. Pierre (@nickfloats)

Like its competitors, Midjourney is not without criticism.
There are concerns over copyright since the founder admitted he didnāt receive consent from the creators of the art the model was trained.
āItās [the dataset] just a big scrape of the Internet. We use the open data sets that are published and train across those. Iād say thatās something that 100% of people do. We werenāt picky.ā
With millions of images needed for a model of this size, that would mean millions of copyright infringements.
However, things seem to be moving in favor of these generative AI models [see AI Art Is Real Art below].
And in the future, Midjourney is hoping to offer artists the ability to opt out of their images being used in the future.

āAI Art Is Real Art,ā Says Judge
The battle against AI rages on, but the tides seem to be turning in favor of generative AI tools.
On Wednesday, Judge William Orrick heard arguments from multiple artists against companies like Stability AI, Midjourney, and DeviantArt.
During the hearing, the judge appeared to side with AI companies stating that he doesnāt think the output images generated by AI are similar enough to the artistās works.
