OpenAI Employee Claims AGI Is Here (Sort Of) 👀

According to an OpenAI employee, Vahid Kazemi, AGI (artificial general intelligence) may already be here, thanks to their new O1 model.

His claim is based on the broad definition of AGI: 'better than most humans at most tasks,' but not expert-level dominance. His statement sparked an interesting discussion, raising questions about whether AI is truly intelligent or just hyper-efficient at following complex 'recipes.'

In response to Vahid’s post, a commenter suggests that AI needs to reach a certain level of agency before it can truly be considered AGI, and another points out that true AGI needs the capability of altering or modifying it’s own architecture to adapt to various environments.

This video of Boston Dynamic’s Atlas exercising a fully autonomous workflow suggest that we are near AGI if all it takes is agency and source-code manipulation. But it’s not quite to the point of “better than most humans at most tasks” in terms of fully autonomous agency.

Fully autonomous robots aren’t all the way there yet, and we’re still about 5 years out according to the ex-CEO of Google, but we are making considerable progress. For better or for worse… 👀
